MLB shifted the Red Sox–Cubs finale to the Rays’ domed Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, for Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The league cited a nor’easter forecast to bring heavy rain, high winds and possible flooding to Boston.
Boston clinched the AL’s second wild-card spot by beating Chicago Friday. The Cubs also clinched a postseason berth and, holding tiebreakers over Arizona, Philadelphia and San Diego, cannot finish third among NL wild cards; they could still overtake San Diego for the top spot depending on the Padres-Diamondbacks series.
The teams had already adjusted the schedule, playing two games in Boston on Friday to get ahead of the wind and rain. The Red Sox said the move followed continued consultation with both clubs because the forecast had not changed.
