Former Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady says he stayed despite chances to leave during the club’s fall to League One, wanting to help win promotion. He now says its return to the Premier League and European football shows how far the club has come.
McGeady joined Sunderland in 2017 after its Premier League relegation and remained through its subsequent drop to League One. He said the club’s progress was built over time and that it began to be run differently after Charlie Methven and Stuart Donald left.
McGeady’s exit followed a dispute over a contract clause: 30 starts would trigger another year, and the club asked him to waive it before outlining a new offer. He refused, saying the club had been content with his performances. He said Sunderland could not specify an offer while its league status was uncertain, and that they parted without bad terms.
