Cincinnati police killed a man at Talbert House in University Heights on Sept. 25 after an active-shooter call. Police said officers and SWAT were shot at as they approached, then exchanged fire with him again in a hallway. He died en route to a hospital.
Police received the call around 7:45 p.m. at the four-story homeless shelter on Central Parkway. Spokesperson Brad Underwood said no officers were injured and that it was unclear whether the man was staying there; Interim Chief Adam Hennie said it did not appear there were other victims inside. Fraternal Order of Police President Ken Kober said the suspect was possibly trying to shoot others. A Sept. 26 news conference was planned, but its time and location had not been announced as of 10:15 a.m.
This was Cincinnati's sixth fatal police shooting in five years. In five of those cases, the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office cleared the officers who fired of wrongdoing, and they faced no charges. In 2018, police fatally shot James Clay at another Talbert House property in Walnut Hills while trying to arrest him in a violent-robbery case; Clay had pulled out a pellet gun officers thought was real.
