Lufthansa's Toronto-bound flight lands in Manchester after cabin odour

Lufthansa said a strange cabin odour prompted its Frankfurt-to-Toronto flight, carrying 371 passengers, to turn back over Scotland and land in Manchester on Saturday. Passengers disembarked normally and are due to fly to Toronto Sunday on a replacement flight.

An in-flight emergency was declared to secure priority landing clearance. The fire brigade inspected the Boeing 747-400 as a precaution because it landed with increased weight from fuel on board; the aircraft is now being examined.

Passengers are being accommodated in hotels for the night. A Lufthansa spokesperson apologized for the disruption and said passenger and crew safety is the airline's top priority.
