Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was booed after his second interception gave New Mexico the ball deep in Sooners territory in a 14-6 win on Sept. 20, 2026. The Sooners had also lost 17-10 to Michigan, but Mateer remains listed as their No. 1 quarterback.
After transferring from Washington State ahead of 2025, Mateer led Oklahoma to a 4-0 start with wins over ranked Michigan and Auburn. He broke a bone in his throwing hand against Auburn, had surgery and returned 13 days later against Texas; he finished 2025 with 2,885 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
After the New Mexico game, Mateer said fans could boo, adding, “We’re people, too.” Oklahoma lists junior Whitt Newbauer, who transferred from Mercer ahead of the 2025 season, as Mateer’s backup.
