Iran offered to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in seven days if the U.S. lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, releases frozen Iranian assets and waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales, among other conditions. The White House has not said if it accepts.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined the proposal privately Thursday on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting. Its conditions largely echo the June agreement to end fighting and begin nuclear talks, which collapsed within days; the faster timetable is the main difference. The U.S. said its envoys and Iran held three hours of indirect talks through mediators Tuesday, the first in months. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the talks good and said Washington was open to more.
Trump said he was in no rush for a deal and posted a map labeling the waterway the “Trump Strait”; the White House had not elaborated on the post. Araghchi said the choice rested with Washington. Iran's security forces warned they still had targets left to strike.
