Hundreds of fans gathered in San Francisco’s Union Square on Friday, Sept. 25, for Dolly Day, a celebration of Dolly Parton held one month after her death. The crowd wore wigs and rhinestones while musicians performed her songs.
Robbie Fitzsimmons performed “Here You Come Again,” and San Francisco group Thee Olde Country opened with “9 to 5.” A Dolly costume contest drew 20 entrants; Lisa Zafina won the final faceoff against drag queen Dirty Carol.
Retired SFPD officer Holly Willett Rios and retired electrical worker Jeanine DuBois drove from Pacifica. DuBois said she valued Parton’s “Just Because I’m a Woman” and recalled how women were relegated to certain kinds of work in the 1970s.
