UN Security Council members condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and the Houthis’ military escalation in Yemen. A joint statement said the actions risk widening the conflict, threatening maritime security and international trade, and undermining peace efforts in Yemen.
The decade-old conflict pits the Iran-backed Houthis against Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which Saudi Arabia supports, and has flared again amid the Iran war. In recent weeks, the Houthis intensified missile and drone attacks on neighboring Saudi Arabia and imposed a blockade on its vessels. Earlier this month, they seized Yemen’s western coast, gaining access to the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait.
