A homeowner said a routine HVAC visit led to a roughly $10,000 repair quote for their 30-year-old natural-gas boiler. After troubleshooting with online forums and AI, they traced the problem to a cracked igniter; a $100 original replacement got it running again.
The homeowner said a $50 aftermarket igniter did not get the boiler running. They tested voltage from the control board, then checked resistance: the replacement read well above 200 ohms, compared with an expected 40–70. They returned it and bought an original igniter from a local supply house.
The homeowner also said the same company had previously charged nearly $900 to replace a zone power head that cost $120, which had made them wary of the later repair recommendations.
