‘Heroes’ creator Tim Kring says Hayden Panettiere was his immediate choice for Claire Bennet, praising her acting range and girl-next-door quality. Panettiere was 16 when cast; she died at 36 on Aug. 16, 2026, and her death was ruled an accident.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kring said the large cast and limited budget led the team to seek relatable performers rather than widely known actors. He described Claire as a slightly quirky cheerleader rather than a “golden girl” and said he had no other actor in mind after Panettiere auditioned.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said Panettiere’s cause of death was the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Heroes premiered in September 2006 and ran for four seasons, ending in 2010.
