Bill Gates said Sunday that agreeing on global rules for artificial intelligence may be harder than Cold War talks to rein in nuclear weapons. He said monitoring AI companies would not handicap the United States in its race with China.
Gates spoke after President Donald Trump rejected calls earlier this month for federal regulation of AI companies. Gates said he expected a consensus after Trump and others heard his argument.
Gates cited past U.S.-backed international efforts on aviation safety, the ozone layer and nuclear weapons as examples of global cooperation. The article also said AI concerns had risen in recent weeks after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned the technology “could kill us all by the end of the decade.”
