GE Vernova, Hitachi, Samsung C&T and Poland-based SGE signed a memorandum to cooperate on market development and commercial opportunities for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor in Europe. The nonbinding pact sets no firm project commitments.
The BWRX-300 was developed by subsidiaries of GE Vernova and Hitachi. The MoU was signed during the Atlantic Council Nuclear Energy Policy Summit in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The article describes SMRs as modular plants that can be built away from their final sites, and cites rising AI data-center power demand and Europe’s effort to reduce reliance on Russian energy inputs as potential drivers of interest.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Japan’s Vice-Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Masayoshi Arai, attended the signing. A separate U.S.-Japan-South Korea memorandum of cooperation, signed at the most recent NATO summit, aims to promote SMR deployment outside those three countries.
