Five men arrested near RAF Fairford over suspected terror preparations

British counterterrorism police arrested five men near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives offenses and of preparing a terrorist act after stopping three suspicious vehicles. The men remain in custody; a possible Iran link is being examined, but no motive has been confirmed.

A Reuters source familiar with the inquiry described an Iran-linked motive as the leading possibility; Russian sabotage and an Islamist plot are also being examined. RAF Fairford has hosted U.S. B-1 and B-52 bombers used in strikes on Iranian missile sites. Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned Britain in July that bases used for attacks on Iranian territory could become legitimate targets.

Police set a roughly 400-meter cordon while an explosive ordnance disposal team examined the vehicles, and about 85 nearby households were advised to evacuate as a precaution. The immediate incident was contained, but the investigation continues. President Donald Trump said U.S. and British authorities had worked together and alleged the suspects intended to cause “big damage”; British authorities have not confirmed that characterization or said how long the men had been under surveillance.
