At a joint news conference with President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani blinked frequently; body-language experts offered different readings, with one suggesting anxiety and another describing the exchange as comfortable.
Susan Constantine interpreted Mamdani’s frequent blinking as an effort to contain anxiety under pressure, which she called “high cognitive load.” Behavioral scientist Abbie Moroño said Trump stayed close, turned toward Mamdani and tapped his arm, reading those gestures as signs of a warm, unguarded interaction.
The pair met privately for an hour before the appearance. Mamdani said he wanted the press on the lawn, while Trump defended barring CNN, Politico and MS NOW from White House grounds and claimed he won the 2024 election in a landslide. They had traded insults during Mamdani’s 2025 mayoral campaign; Trump later praised him at an Oval Office meeting in November 2025.
