Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Newsweek Israel is promoting a “misguided” portrayal of Türkiye as a threat. He said Türkiye has no hostility toward Israelis, called Israel’s actions in Syria unlawful and destabilizing, and urged diplomacy to prevent conflict.
Erdogan linked the Israeli rhetoric to Israel’s domestic political dynamics and electoral climate. Tensions have also centered on Syria: Israeli strikes hit Abu al-Duhur air base in Idlib hours after a Turkish military delegation reportedly left. Israeli officials accused Syrian counterparts of violating understandings on foreign forces; Ankara condemned the strike.
Weeks after Türkiye signed a mutual defense pact with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, Israel signed a defense deal with Greece for a multilayered system covering Greek territory, including Aegean islands near Türkiye. Erdogan said Greece’s ties with other countries were its choice, while Türkiye closely monitors actions that may jeopardize its security, lawful rights and interests.
