Texas counties received tens of thousands of delayed voter applications and updates, some dating to October 2025, after a DPS portal error. DPS says it has been fixed; voters should check their status before the Oct. 5 deadline for the Nov. 3 election.
The Texas Association of County Election Officials said the delayed records came through the DPS portal, which lets people register or update their registration when renewing or updating a driver’s license. DPS told the Texas Tribune it worked with the Secretary of State’s office to identify incomplete records and backfill information, but did not explain what caused the issue or how widespread it was.
State Rep. James Talarico warned that thousands of Texans may not know their registration status and urged them to check. Rep. John Bucy III called on Gov. Greg Abbott to provide counties with resources and demanded answers about the error. Voters can check their registration and address through the Secretary of State’s lookup at VoteTexas.gov.
