Discord began a global age-assurance rollout Sept. 23, 2026, using behavioral signals to classify accounts as adult, teen or unconfirmed. Discord says over 90% of accounts won't be asked to confirm age; teen accounts face access limits.
The model uses account tenure, device information, activity patterns and server participation; Discord says it does not read message content or use profile demographics. Teen accounts are blocked from age-restricted servers and channels. For them, message requests from non-friends go to a separate inbox, and friend requests from people with no mutual friends carry a warning; confirmed adults face no routine changes. Misclassified users can appeal through credit-card age confirmation or age-group signals from Apple's App Store or Google Play. Facial age estimation and government ID verification are also available, but are not the default.
An October 2025 database leak at a former third-party customer-service provider exposed government-ID photos submitted for age-related appeals by about 70,000 users, Discord disclosed; it attributed the incident to the vendor, not its own systems. EFF reporting says current partners k-ID globally and Persona in the UK are separate from that provider. Laws in Brazil and Texas also helped drive the rollout.
