Denmark’s defence minister says Copenhagen is confident NATO’s increased military presence in Greenland and the Arctic will continue. Last week’s U.S.-Denmark-Greenland agreement envisages two additional U.S. bases and a greater NATO role.
Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus said Denmark hopes Arctic Sentry, NATO’s mission launched earlier this year to increase exercises and patrols, will continue beyond this year and next and become permanent. The mission was launched amid tensions within NATO over President Donald Trump’s push to acquire Greenland.
Bruus said a greater NATO role matters as climate-change-driven ice melt opens Arctic shipping routes and interest in the region grows, including from Russia and China.
