Police say Walter Moorhead, 74, was arrested after fatally shooting Maria Chilel Soto, 39, while hunting in Delaware on Sept. 18; he allegedly mistook her for a deer. He faces five felony counts and was released on $43,000 bond; the case remains under investigation.
The counts include first-degree reckless endangering, manslaughter caused by reckless conduct and possession of a firearm during a felony. If convicted, Moorhead could face up to 25 years for manslaughter, which carries a two-year minimum; the other two listed charges carry maximums of five and 25 years, respectively.
Soto’s nephew, Belman Robles, started a GoFundMe for funeral costs, expenses to return her body to Guatemala and potential support for her five children. As of Sept. 22, it had raised $14,891 toward a $26,000 goal.
