CRS analysis of the Federal Reserve’s 2022 survey found nearly 46% of U.S. households had no retirement savings account, while about 4.6% held more than $1 million in retirement assets. Moneywise outlines five levels, from none to $2 million-plus.
The CRS review also says nearly 30% of households had $100,000 or less in retirement accounts; 15.5% had $100,001–$500,000, and 4.7% had $500,001–$1 million. Separately, Vanguard’s preview of its 2026 report put the median retirement account balance among its plan participants at $44,115 in 2025.
Moneywise’s top category starts at $2 million, but the cited CRS statistic combines all households with more than $1 million. The article gives no separate share for households with $2 million or more.
