Clear roles and workflows can give teams room to work independently

Forbes

Unclear roles and decision rights can drive micromanagement, a Forbes article argues. It recommends five fixes: clarify authority, schedule updates, match work to strengths, use technology with safeguards and document processes so teams can work independently.

The article cites the American Psychological Association’s 2023 Work in America Survey: 42% of workers reported feeling micromanaged. Among them, 64% said they typically felt tense or stressed during the workday, compared with 36% of workers who did not feel micromanaged. It also cites Psychology Today on effects including reduced autonomy, creativity, motivation and productivity, and higher turnover.

The proposed framework distinguishes decisions employees can make independently, those requiring consultation and those to escalate because of financial, legal, compliance, reputational or operational risk. For AI-assisted tools, the article says organizations should set rules for privacy, confidential information, approved platforms, accuracy, human review and decision authority.
