Pope Leo XIV is due to celebrate Mass at Paris's Place de la Concorde on Saturday; the Catholic Church says about 600,000 people have registered to attend. He is scheduled to travel to Lourdes in southwestern France in the afternoon.
At Friday's meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, Leo praised France as the country of human rights but criticized a new law permitting euthanasia and the constitutional right to abortion. The four-day visit is his first to France since he was elected pope last year and is due to end Monday in Metz, where he plans to speak on Europe.
France has maintained strict church-state separation for more than a century, except in a few eastern regions. Macron does not plan to attend any of the pope's Masses.
