China Mobile has open-sourced Open-RAIL, software designed to reduce jerky humanoid-robot motion by letting motors act while slower AI models plan the next movement. Researchers report 100-fold less jerkiness and more than double speed; independent testing is still needed.
Open-RAIL separates observation at 30 Hz, model inference at 5–10 Hz and motor control at 200 Hz to 1 kHz. This lets a robot execute one movement chunk while the model prepares the next; the software smooths motion within chunks and blends the transitions between them.
The researchers also report task-success figures spanning 10% to 73%, but the project site does not break them down by task. Open-RAIL includes a server-client deployment layer, a web control panel, data recording and a tool for operators to correct a robot mid-task.
