Gordon Chang told Newsmax he believes President Donald Trump held firm on Taiwan at Thursday’s summit with Xi Jinping. China’s account says Xi urged Washington to oppose Taiwan independence; neither leader answered questions about whether they discussed it.
China’s official account said Xi cited Beijing’s positions on “national reunification” and territorial integrity and urged Washington to handle the issue prudently. The White House had not released a detailed account of the exchange by Thursday night.
Taiwan’s government pushed back Friday, accusing Beijing of “distorting facts” and saying only Taiwan’s people can determine its future. Chang said Chinese officials routinely press Beijing’s position on Taiwan at high-level meetings without producing changes in U.S. policy.
