St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 5-1 on Wednesday, scoring five runs in the third and fourth innings to back Matthew Liberatore. After allowing Brandon Lowe’s solo homer in the second, Liberatore kept the Pirates scoreless until he left with two outs in the sixth.
JJ Wetherholt finished with three hits. Alec Burleson and Leo Bernal each drove in a run in the third, while Masyn Winn doubled in a run and Wetherholt singled him home in the fourth. Iván Herrera was hit by a pitch for the 31st time this season, tying the Cardinals’ single-season record set by Steve Evans in 1910.
The teams were scheduled to meet again Thursday at PNC Park, with first pitch set for 11:35 a.m. Paul Skenes was set to face St. Louis, which planned to use Kyle Leahy for at least the first few innings, depending on his pitch-count limit.
