Baltimore beat Toronto 4-2 in Wednesday’s doubleheader opener, eliminating the Blue Jays from postseason contention. Pete Alonso’s 41st home run of the season gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead, and the victory kept Baltimore alive for at least a few more hours.
Chris Bassitt allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings plus two batters; Max Scherzer gave up four runs in five innings. Toronto scored twice in the sixth after a throwing error, but Anthony Nunez recorded the final out of the inning and pitched a scoreless seventh.
The Orioles could be mathematically eliminated in the second game of the doubleheader with a loss, or if the White Sox beat the Royals. Trey Gibson was set to start the Orioles’ game, scheduled for 6:35; White Sox-Royals was due to begin at 7:40.
