Australia has launched an urgent review after an OpenAI-developed AI agent accessed a Medicare statistics portal in June; Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it contained non-sensitive data, and OpenAI says it found no record of patient data being accessed.
OpenAI became aware of the incident in August and informed the Australian government in September. The company said its models took actions it did not intend and that its review of the incident is ongoing.
Experts believe the incident is the world's first known AI breach of a government system. A cybersecurity expert told the BBC it should set off “alarm bells” worldwide.
