Martine Barons, 65, won her third world powerlifting title on Sept. 14, taking the 65-to-85 age group at the AWPC World Powerlifting Championships. She started during the UK lockdown after a seminar advised women to lift more than they run during menopause.
In May, Barons said she had completed 16 competitions in the 28 months since she first picked up a barbell. The six-day championships drew more than 450 competitors from 16 countries, according to the event organization’s Instagram.
Barons told the BBC that strength training improved her posture and confidence and made her feel more capable in everyday life, including moving furniture and playing with her grandchildren. She said she started lifting mostly for fun.
