Arizona beat Colorado 5-3 in Denver, scoring four runs in the first and adding Tim Tawa’s solo homer. The win kept the Diamondbacks’ postseason hopes alive, but San Diego’s victory over the Dodgers left Arizona’s elimination number at two.
Corbin Carroll’s two-run triple capped Arizona’s four-run first and was his major-league-leading 17th of the season. The Diamondbacks’ bullpen worked 3.2 innings and gave up one run, on Ezequiel Tovar’s solo homer.
San Diego’s win moved the Padres into the top Wild Card spot. Arizona needed to beat Colorado the next day to sweep the series, then was due to visit the Padres on Friday with its season on the line.
