Angus councillors have approved demolishing 145 flood-damaged homes in Brechin’s River Street area, hit when the South Esk burst its defences in October 2023. The council has also proposed raising the flood wall, with the work costed at about £8.2m.
The demolition plan also covers five garages; 29 of the homes are privately owned. Angus Council says nobody will be made homeless and housing officers will help council tenants, private renters and homeowners find their next home.
The South Esk flood forced 60 households to be rescued, while many others went to evacuation centres in Montrose and Forfar. Many properties have remained empty since the October 2023 flooding, and residents told the BBC they had been left in uncertainty.
