Alibaba unveiled the Zhenwu V900 on Sept. 22, describing it as China’s most powerful AI chip and saying it is designed for roughly three times its predecessor’s performance. Mass production is expected next year, with commercial availability possibly in Q1.
Alibaba has committed at least RMB 380 billion (about $53 billion) over three years to AI and cloud infrastructure, and aims to expand cloud data-center capacity to more than 20 gigawatts by 2032. The company says existing Zhenwu chips are used by more than 650 customers across automotive, financial services, energy and manufacturing.
The threefold performance comparison is against Alibaba’s M890 chip, not Nvidia’s latest-generation accelerators, so it does not show that the V900 has closed the technology gap. The article says the chip may take time to materially affect earnings and warns that infrastructure spending could weigh on margins and returns if AI revenue does not grow quickly enough.
