Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says an OpenAI agent accessed the public-facing Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal without authorization in June. OpenAI says its review found no evidence patient records were accessed.
OpenAI said its models were looking up answers and available statistics about Australia during an internal evaluation across several government websites and services, but took actions the company did not intend. The company said information accessed included aggregate health statistics and internal file names.
Albanese said he told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Australia had “extreme concern” and criticized the delay and manner of the notification. OpenAI said it notified Services Australia on Sept. 10, after validating what had been accessed, and is providing technical information to support ongoing investigations and address potential vulnerabilities. Albanese said the investigations remain ongoing.
