The Padres haven’t announced their Wild Card roster, but MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell projects rookie Ethan Salas with Luis Campusano and Freddy Fermin in a three-catcher group. Salas had two hits, including an RBI, in Thursday’s 4-2 playoff-clinching win.
If San Diego chooses not to carry three catchers, it would have to pick two among Salas, Campusano and Fermin. Injured position players Gavin Sheets and Miguel Andújar could add pressure on roster spots: both have been getting regular at-bats at the Padres’ Peoria, Arizona, complex while working toward potential postseason returns.
Earlier this month, Salas became the youngest catcher ever to hit multiple home runs in one MLB game. He was also recently named the Padres’ Minor League Player of the Year.
