New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell resigned Friday after an independent probe found he behaved inappropriately with women and committed other ethical violations, Gov. Mikie Sherrill said. His attorney said they contest the report and are weighing legal remedies.
The investigation, released Wednesday, said Caldwell made sexually offensive remarks to female staff, including telling one, after his advances toward her friend were rebuffed, “you young women are looking for young sperm.” He denied making that remark, but investigators said they did not find his denial credible. The report also said he repeatedly sought a promotion for a state employee with whom he had a romantic relationship; he was accused of bringing personal guests to ticketed events without paying.
Sherrill had called on Caldwell to resign Thursday. She named state acting comptroller Shirley Emehelu as acting lieutenant governor and said she would decide within 45 days on a permanent replacement.
